¡Eh, ven a divertirte con Crrrrrazy Taxi! Conduce a toda pastilla en hora punta dando vueltas de campana. Salta desde los aparcamientos y haz Crazy Combos para asustar a tus clientes y sacarles más pasta. En Crazy Taxi el tiempo es dinero y solo ganan los taxistas más chalados.

Hay partido por todo lo alto en el estadio de baseball. Un enfervorecido fan te pide que le lleves cuanto antes al estadio. Sin dejarle acomodarse en el habitáculo pisas a fondo y conduces por el carril contrario esquivando a los vehículos que vienen de frente, pitándote por lo salvaje de tu conducción. El tiempo es reducido. ¿Serás capaz de llegar a tiempo y mantener a tu cliente contento?

Modos de juego.

  1. Arcade: es exactamente la recreativa que todavía se puede encontrar en varios salones de nuestra geografía. Consiste en buscar pasajeros, recogerlos y llevarlos a su destino, con el objetivo de acabar con la mayor cantidad posible de dólares en nuestro taxímetro al concluir el tiempo de que disponemos. Dentro de este modo tenemos dos opciones, como son emplear "reglas arcade", en las que partimos de un tiempo inicial que se va modificando según nuestra actuación, y "juego libre", en el que deberemos actuar de taxista durante 3, 5 o 10 minutos, es decir con un tiempo fijo ya de partida.
  2. Original: el funcionamiento es exactamente igual que en el modo arcade, incluso en cuanto a los modos "reglas arcade" y "juego libre" de 3, 5 o 10 minutos. La diferencia consiste en que en este modo la ciudad es diferente a la del modo arcade, especialmente diseñada para la conversión a Dreamcast.
  3. Crazy Box: este modo, otra de las novedades de la conversión a Dreamcast, presenta una serie de pruebas de lo más variado, agrupadas en saltos, velocidad y habilidad. A medida que vayamos superando pruebas se abrirán nuevos retos, en general más complicados que los anteriores.

In Crazy Taxi, time is money, and only the Craziest Cabbies come out victorious.

Features

Crazy Taxi is an arcade-like racer where the player takes the role of a taxi driver who weaves his way through crowded streets, across sidewalks and even under water, in a wild and frantic race to deliver passengers on time. The courses are largely set inside cities crowded with general traffic and pedestrians (which can't be run over, they dive away). The main goal is to bring as many customers as possible to their destination in time. Available customers are marked through circles and the colour represents the distance and the fare they offer. Green means long rides with plenty of money, and red ones are very short.

In the main Arcade mode there is a timer that quickly runs down. It can be replenished by picking up customers. While driving reckless maneuvers are encouraged. Players can disregard all traffic rules and customers give extra tips for speedy and dangerous driving, but these can only be cashed when the customer arrives at his destination in time. By the same token the reward at the end of a ride is based on the amount of time left, as each customer also has a personal timer. The city is filled with slopes and jumps, and the game uses a very loose driving model. No damage can be done to the car, so driving as fast as possible is encouraged. While driving players can toy with the gears to perform two special tricks: a crazy drift and a crazy boost to speed up more quickly.

Next to the Arcade mode there is an Original mode, and Crazy Box where specific goals need to be met on closed down courses. In the regular modes it is possible to disregard the usual timer and play for a fixed amount of minutes. At the end of the race the player is rewarded with a license, either D, C, B or A, with S for an outstanding performance. Next to the interactive courses from the arcade version there is a new course for home consoles. There are four cabs and drivers to choose from. The cars have different statistics and the drivers different attitudes while racing. The game has a soundtrack featuring The Offspring and Bad Religion (not for the Xbox 360 version).

If you think it's hard to flag down a cab in a big city, try driving one in Sega's zany straight-from-the-arcade port of Crazy Taxi. If you're one of the teeming fans who eagerly played Crazy Taxi in the arcade at 50p a pop, then this game is a must-buy, if only from a purely economic standpoint. Even those who don't know the difference between Crazy Taxi and the long-running TV series Taxiwill immediately recognise the appeal of this game. In fact, this game is so impressive and addictive that it should easily convince a whole new wave of buyers to purchase a Sega Dreamcast.

What's so hot about Crazy Taxi? For starters, the graphics sport the most impressive re-creation of a living city ever seen in a video game. The level of detail is astounding and never ceases to surprise the player as block after unique block speeds by. The city is a distilled version of San Francisco with some landmarks and neighbourhoods left intact. Making it seem all the more real are apparent product-placements of real-world retail locations such as KFC, Tower Records and Pizza Hut. And just about everything you see on the screen is interactive: phone boxes and post boxes topple when bumped or smashed, pedestrians leap and tumble out of your path and the myriad traffic attempts to avoid your erratic high-speed antics. While some driving games brag about a lack of boundaries, this one delivers--players drive on the ocean floor, off the second floor of a car park, through parks and down stairs. A helpful hovering arrow points drivers in the correct direction, but you can truly drive wherever you want at any time, making for tonnes of replay value.

While the game is a direct port from the arcade game of the same name, there's plenty more depth in the home version. In addition to the city that appears in the coin-op version, the Dreamcast version also includes an entirely new city. Crazy Taxi includes a trunk-load of mini-games that help to teach drivers how to perform the special speed boosts and manoeuvres in the game. Though this game would be plenty exciting without any sounds at all, it has an adrenaline-pumping soundtrack supplied by punk-crossover bands the Offspring and Bad Religion, as well as some good, if sometimes monotonous, dialogue between the driver and the passengers. --Jeff Young
