Actua Soccer 3 es un juego de fútbol desarrollado por Gremlin para PC y PlayStation 1 y publicado a fines de 1998. Se planificó una versión para Nintendo 64, pero se canceló tras seis meses de desarrollo debido a las bajas ventas del juego Body Harvest para la plataforma.
Por primera vez, estuvieron presentes tanto clubes como equipos nacionales, además de otros equipos (como el Arsenal LFC) y varios equipos ficticios. Si bien Actua Soccer 2 había sido criticado por la ausencia de equipos de clubes, Actua Soccer 3 presentó un total de 25 ligas con 450 equipos nacionales e internacionales, más que cualquier otro juego de la época, excepto el anterior Sensible World of Soccer, así como más de 10000 jugadores. Los gráficos utilizaron una versión ligeramente mejorada del motor Actua Soccer 2 con efectos meteorológicos muy mejorados. Trevor Brooking fue reemplazado por Martin O'Neill como compañero de comentarios de Barry Davies. Gremlin's Actua Sports series has tended to lack something in comparison with the Electronic Arts range, but the latest edition of Actua Soccer has emerged from mid-table mediocrity to give EA reason for looking over its shoulder.
Game play isn't as easy to pick up as some other titles, but with a little perseverance the subtle range of moves, passes and shots is soon revealed. A decent gamepad and a reasonable understanding of the skill moves are just about essential for consistent success.
It takes an effort to beat the top teams but that makes victory more satisfying. Plus, the great moments are replayed from all sorts of angles after each match, making a tight 1-0 battle seem like a 6-0 avalanche.
Get too adventurous with those revolutionary attacking formations you've always wanted to try and the avalanche may well result, although the replays may not be too flattering.
Graphics are up to the high standards we've come to expect in any serious recent sports-game release, particularly with a decent 3D card.
For the tinkerers there's plenty to fiddle with. Choose from more than 450 club and international teams and 25 leagues. And if the 10,000 individually researched players on offer up aren't up to scratch, make up your own.
When you get tired of that lot, there's a few dozen bonus teams that are unlocked by taking the time and effort to win one of the various league or cup competitions. Unless, of course, you decide to scour the internet for thenecessary cheat codes.
Among the bonus teams are some of the classic sides of the past. But others - a team of supermodels, anyone? - are obviously just to show us that the designers are really wild and wacky guys at heart.
